The more things change, the more they stay the same

How much has changed in Washington, D.C.? On the pork-barrel front, apparently not a lot. An effort to have a one-year moratorium on so-called congressional “earmarks” went down in flames Thursday night. The proposal was defeated by a 71-29 vote. Apparently, the vast majority of senators think that spending your money back home is their birthright.

North Carolina’s two U.S. senators, Republicans Richard Burr and Elizabeth Dole, voted for the one-year moratorium. The three remaining presidential candidates, Democrats Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York along with Republican John McCain of Arizona also voted for the one-year reprieve.

Most senators from both parties voted against the effort. Pork survives.
