Insider's view of the state capital

Selling Obama’s seat

A few weeks ago, when a group of state capital reporters gathered for an annual conference in Raleigh, the topic of government corruption came up. I commented that at least four former state legislators, including the former speaker of the House, are currently sitting in either federal or state prison.

A reporter from Illinois replied that their governor was about to be indicted. Today, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was indicted on charges of trying to sell the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat of President-elect Barack Obama. Blagojevich’s charges make former N.C. House Speaker Jim Black’s government corruption charges look like petty crimes.
