Lottery bills always seem controversial. One that would have prohibited check-cashing businesses from selling lottery tickets went down tonight by a vote of 20-23. It also would have prohibited lottery advertising at high school sporting events.
Sen. David Hoyle, D-Gaston, led the effort to kill the bill in the Senate. He said it could hurt some small businesses. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Pricey Harrison, D-Guilford.
The bill passed the House earlier this year 84-29.
