Insider's view of the state capital

A little respect is worth noting

It’s worth noting that House Speaker Joe Hackney, D-Orange, shows his colleagues some respect when it comes to extending a session beyond the standard adjournment time. He asks if there’s an objection. If so, there’s a vote taken.

The former House speaker, Rep. Jim Black, D-Mecklenburg, would merely ignore the rule and have the clock in the chamber stopped before it reached the 10 p.m. quitting time on Monday or 9 p.m. curfew on other nights.

Hackney knows he can’t stop time.
