North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Tom Fetzer has fired off a letter to Michael Steele, the embattled chairman of the Republican National Committee, asking him to quit.
“I believe that the best service you can render to your party at this critical juncture is to graciously step aside and allow the party to move on from its current quagmire,” Fetzer writes. “It will best move forward under new leadership.”
Steele as come under fire for his leadership abilities since it was revealed that the RNC reimbursed about $2,000 in expenses for members of the Young Eagles at a Hollywood topless night club. The Young Eagles program is aimed at targeting contributions to the GOP from people younger than 45.
Steele did not attend the outing at the strip club. But since the revelation, some have questioned how well he is monitoring the party’s money.
A report in the Christian Science Monitor suggested that the GOP is already marginalizing Steele to help its image as the nation heads into midterm elections.
Republicans, for sure, are seeing this as more than a minor distraction. They want this controversy to go away.
