A bill which would change North Carolina law and make certain information obtained by the state auditor’s office confidential apparently won’t be pursued.
State Rep. Larry Brown, R-Forsyth, said he filed the bill on behalf of the auditor’s office. He said the office had requested his sponsorship because he chairs the House Government Committee.
Information concerning investigative decisions, actions and dispositions would have been considered confidential if the bill were approved. It could be disclosed only for the purpose of gathering additional information or furthering the auditor’s investigation.
In addition, the response of those being audited would no longer be included in the final report of an audit.
The bill was opposed by the N.C. Press Association. Brown said Monday night that controversy over the bill prompted the auditor’s office to decide not to push for the bill. Brown said he does not plan to pursue it.
