Two people have announced their intention to run for newly created seats in the General Assembly, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

Kerry Sutton, a Durham attorney and a Democrat, announced that she plans to run in the District 22 Senate seat. That seat covers Caswell and Person counties and a portion of Durham County. It is a solid Democratic district.

Cathy Wright, a Chatham County Republican, plans to run for the open House District 54 seat. Wright unsuccessfully challenged current House Minority Leader Joe Hackney, D-Orange, in the general election last year.

House District 54 includes Chatham County and a portion of Lee County. It too is a solid Democratic district. The N&O report notes that Wright garnered 43 percent of the vote against Hackney last year and feels that the new District 54 will be more supportive of Republicans.
